A year in the school garden, four minutes a morning

Each morning the class finds today's square on the calendar, sees which kind of day it is, and sows, waters or harvests to match. The stories and songs give the children words for what they see happening in the soil.

The four kinds of day

Every day belongs to one part of the plant

Root dayEarth

Plants that grow under the soil: carrot, mullangi (radish), beetroot, onion, ginger, turmeric.

Leaf dayWater

Plants we eat as leaves: keerai, kothamalli (coriander), pudina (mint), vendhayam (fenugreek).

Flower dayLight

Plants that give us flowers: samanthi (marigold), sunflower, hibiscus, jasmine.

Fruit & seed dayFire

Plants that give us fruits and seeds: tomato, vendakkai (okra), beans, pumpkin, maize.

The calendar shows which kind each day is for the whole of 2026, so even the youngest children can find today by its colour.

Bring a growing programme to your school

Sarvam Ekam and Karu set up classroom gardens with schools: a teacher orientation, the growing medium mixed in front of the children, and a plant of their own for every child to care for through the year.
